Let Them Eat Cake,..and lots of it.

This past Tuesday I had the pleasure of shooting another event involving people, eating food, lots of it, then some more, for a title or a record or something of the sort. (but no naked women, i.e., the wing bowl) The Fourth annual Fat Tuesday King Cake Eating World Championship, was held at the House of Blues, at the Showboat in Atlantic City. 12 world class eaters ready to devour as many of these overgrown dense, bricks of  flour, milk and sugar that they can. In all of those four years, one eater has reigned supreme, and that is Chicagoan Patrick “Deep Dish” Bertoletti, whom has basically owned this competition since 2008. the other notable is Sonya “The Black Widow”Thomas, who is the fourth ranked eater in the world, and currently the five -time world buffalo wing eating champion. Other competitors include Crazy Legs Conti, the 20th ranked eater in the world by Major League Eating and  Beef Brisket Buffet-Eating Champion. “The Real Deal” Larell Marie Mele, 29th ranked eater by Major League Eating (this woman ate 10 pepperoni rolls in 10 minutes)  With 2000.00 bucks at stake, it came down to the 2 big names in the contest, "Deep Dish", and "the Black Widow". The eventual winner, “Deep Dish” Bertoletti defeated “The Black Widow” eating 10.5 king cakes in the allotted time. Thomas finished with eight eaten cakes. Incredible.

Run!!

Over the summer, I covered quite a few running events. To me, these guys are the ultimate athletes, running, testing and pushing their level of endurance, awe inspiring stuff. ( queing up the theme song for "Chariots of Fire") Philly really knows how to host these events.

The Wing Bowl, 2013

Once again, I find myself at the Wells Fargo center, shooting this event. By all matters of common sense, an event of this content, would not be a big deal. Grown men, testing the limits of personal gluttony, slapping each other on the back, bonding complete. However,..add the element of spectacle, beer (lots of that) pay per view, big corporate sponsorship, more beer, women, in various modes of dress ( I mean barely clothed)and a rabid, fan base of support over the world, you have the wing bowl. Originally meant to be a guy's fun prelude to the big game, this event (i'm sure the NFL has distanced itself way apart from it) Has taken on a life of its own.
